Alone, Together

Alone, Together: Short Stories written during Lockdown

A woman leaves her house before dawn to attend an illegal hug-in in the woods; two neighbours conduct an argument using only a trumpet and a baby grand piano; a mother writes letters to her teenage son, who refuses to leave his bedroom; a nephew delivers groceries to the Aunt he has always feared; a neighbour is caught hoarding toilet paper; a bride celebrates her wedding, alone and six-year-old Gloria Hooper fills in her learning journal after a busy day of home-schooling…

Follow the lives of these characters and others as they each cope with lockdown in their own, unique ways.

Written with warmth, humour and poignancy, Liz Jennings’ latest collection of short stories is a writer’s response to the vast range of emotions and situations that the nation has experienced alone, together. It may be set in the midst of the Corona crisis, but the tales within this collection explore the eternal universal themes of love, loss, regret, joy and much more.

This book was recommended to me by 2 friends – so I bought it. It arrived a week ago and I’ve just finished it, a collection of short stories written during lockdown about lockdown. They’re beautiful. My school was closed for 3 days last week due to Covid. I taught from home, it was an unsettling and anxious time, going back to work has also been stressful. When I’ve had a bundle full of nervous energy, this book has helped me. Maybe you wouldn’t think that a book on the very topic that is the root of my nervous energy would help, but Liz has created a thing of gorgeous beauty. I therefore pass on the baton – buy it, read it, love it.

I have loved reading this, sneaking off with a coffee, sitting in the garden, after months of really stressful home schooling. It’s been great to see lockdown from different perspectives and the characters have been very relatable! Some of the short stories are very moving, and some are funny.

You should buy this, read it and then put it on your lockdown time capsule or memory box, to look back on as Liz speaks for us all, and it will be great to look back on.

5 stars!
